Original location probable in the area between Hillsboro Pike and Chickering Road.

 

Census of 1850.  Davidson County, Tennessee

   John Chickering was listed as Head of household.  Age 55.  Born Massachusetts

   Sally Chickering, wife of John.  Age 50. Born North Carolina

   Children:  John 16;  Sarah 21;  Charles 13; William 10; Eliza Hartwell  19

   (Note: Only person with name “Chickering” listed 1850 Census in Tennessee)

 

Will Book 17. Davidson County.  Will  Pages 492-493.   Inventory Page 352

Will of John Chickering.  Written October 6, 1856. Recorded Feb. 23, 1858

    To his wife Sarah, his household and kitchen furniture and 300 acres “on

      which I now reside” 

    To my daughter Mary F, Lovejoy “$1,000 and no more from my estate”

    To my four children, “sale of real estate to be divided between my four

       children:  John D. Chickering, Charles B. Chickering, William H. Chickering

       and Sarah F. Fleming”

Map of Davidson County, Tennessee, by Wilbur F. Foster, 1871, shows the location of the C.B. Chickering home place, in District 11, to the west of Hillsboro Pike, about two miles north of the Williamson County line.  C. B. Chickering, son of John Chickering, was a neighbor to the Hardings of Belle Meade Plantation.

Section III Lot S ½ - 94   “Sarah Chickering. Removed from Public Vault to this lot.

July 10, 1879.”   Sarah Chickering, wife of John Chickering, died December 12, 1878, and was first buried in the Vault at Mt. Olivet.

On March 7, 2005, Fletch Coke visited Mt. Olivet Cemetery  Section III Lot S ½ - 94.

A handsome obelisk bears the following inscriptions:

     Died Nov. 29, 1857

 

     Sarah Waites

     Wife of John Chickering

     Born Aug. 3, 1796

     Died Dec. 12, 1878

 

     Sarah Chickering

     Wife of R. T. Fleming

     Born Aug. 1, 1828

     Died Jan. 13, 1887

 

     Robert T. Fleming

     Born Nov. 24, 1826

     Died Dec. 8, 1906
