Information was sent to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey, on March 8, 2004, by Mary Charlotte Hall, regarding the McCrory Cemetery, listed in Edythe Whitley’s ca. 1940’s book entitled McCrory-Greer Families. The following is from this book:
“This McCrory or Grimes Graveyard is about one mile from the Johnson Church on the Morrell place, on the line of Williamson and Davidson counties, in fact the county line runs through the same lot in which the cemetery is in… I (Edythe Whitley) interviewed Mrs. Morrell. Mrs. Morrell said that when she was a child John Bell McCrory, son of Thomas McCrory, lived in the old McCrory house adjoining her home… John Bell McCrory was a miser according to Mrs. Morrell and his love for money and land created the desire to use the entire field for cultivation. He removed the stones (from his mother’s and father’s graves) and cut down the trees, plowed over the graves. The stones were carried to the cemetery across the road and placed without removing the graves. I (Edythe Whitley) then went to old cemetery across the road on her son’s farm and found the tombstones as she had explained. They were in the fence corner, not stationary, but loose. Fortunately are unbroken and can be plainly read. In this old cemetery (McCrory) there are some ten or more graves marked only with rock slabs without inscriptions… The general condition is what I can only term ‘terrible.’ In a few more years there will be nothing to carry on the history of this cemetery and the people who lie buried there. Hogs run at will now, the fence is nearly down, the trees are deadening, and the stones will soon be discarded or broken and made impossible to read.”
Edythe Whitley recorded these tombstones in the McCrory Cemetery in the 1940’s.
