NICHOLS-WILLIAMS CEMETERY (REMOVED)
OH-50: NASHVILLE, DAVIDSON COUNTY, TN.
Original location was near present-day intersection of Woodmont Blvd. & Harding Pike.
Information was sent to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey project about the removal of the graves from the Nichols-Williams family cemetery which was once located near the historic house called Woodlawn. Information was provided to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey project by Paul Clements, historian, by Carol Kaplan, Nashville Room, Public Library, and by Linda Bussard, Family Service Counselor at Mt. Olivet. The following research findings were prepared by Fletch Coke, Davidson County Cemetery Survey project.
Willoughby Williams died on December 8, 1882.
Nashville Banner, Saturday, December 9, 1882. “The death of Col. Willoughby Williams occurred yesterday at the home of his daughter in Louisville, Kentucky.”
Nashville Banner, Monday, December 11, 1882. “ The remains of Col. Willoughby Williams arrived in the city yesterday morning and were conveyed to the residence of Col. A. S. Colyar, on Spruce Street. In the afternoon, the remains were taken to the First Presbyterian church where the funeral service was held. The remains were accompanied into the church by Col. A. S. Colyar, Judge Jos. C. Guild, Judge Nathaniel Baxter, John M. Lea, ex-Governor James D. Porter, Messrs. A. G. Adams, Anson Nelson and James M. Hamilton, who acted as pall-bearers… The remains were deposited in a vault at Mount Olivet Cemetery.”
Mt. Olivet Cemetery opened in 1856.

On October 29, 2004, Fletch Coke and Ruth Warner visited Section 1 Lot 27, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Family tombstones for the Nichols, Cabler and Williams family were found on the cemetery lot. No tombstone was located for Willoughby Williams. It is possible that his marker has been covered over since the lot is located on a hillside. The tombstones on this lot are in need of restoration.
