Additions.   AN-97  Old Central State Hospital Cemetery

Request has been made, from the Davidson County Cemetery Survey project, to officials in the field of Mental Health,  to consider developing and providing lists of those buried in cemeteries on the grounds of Old Central State Hospital.   Before the cemeteries were closed to interments, in the 1950s, there were two separate cemeteries provided for deceased white patients and for deceased African-American patients.   If this burial information is made available by Mental Health officials,  the interment lists will be placed on the Davidson County Cemetery Survey web site.  Only five tombstones were located and recorded, by the Cemetery Surveyors on March 5, 2002, in white burial site.   There may have been as many as  1700 white burials and 700 African-American burials in the two cemeteries.
