Initial research into the history of the Pest House has revealed that there were several locations for the Pest House in Davidson County and probably several cemeteries. According to information on the Nashville Metropolitan Bordeaux Hospital web site, the Pest House, on Charlotte Pike, was used prior to 1917, “to house and care for persons with infectious and contagious diseases.” Isolation of these sick people was thought necessary to reduce the threat of epidemics. For more information on the Pest House and the Isolation Hospital, go to the web site at www.nashville.org/bordeaux/history
Research is continuing on the locations of the Pest House cemeteries. Initial study of the Death Records of Nashville, 1889-1896, finds people buried in the Pest House Cemetery, during this period, who had died of consumption, old age and Summer Complaint.
