SITE SURVEYED APRIL 16, 2000

Re-visit was made to the Providence Church Cemetery on January 14, 2004, to look for one additional tombstone reported to be in the graveyard and as well as for the “Hardgrave” military tombstones.  On January 14, 2004, the tombstone for Louis DeMoss, recorded in 1995, by Charles E. Doggett, was not visible, as it had not been visible in 2000.  In a publication, entitled “Nashville Hardgrave Cemetery: 1995 Report,” Mr. Doggett recorded this inscription: “In Memory of Louis DeMoss.  Born Oct. 1753 – Died. Sept. 1820.”  On the cover of this publication was a photograph of the military markers for Francis Hardgrave and Skelton Hardgrave.  On January 14, 2004, Cemetery Survey Volunteers found information, on a paper notice, about the removal of the Hardgrave military tombstones from the Providence Church Cemetery:

“The DAR obtained military stones for Skelton and his father Francis Hardgrave, in 1941,

and erected (them) here.  The Hardgrave Family Cemetery was later discovered across the

river in what is now Horseshoe Bend development.  In 1999, both stones were moved to

the correct cemetery.  Francis’ original stone is still there (Hardgrave Cemetery) and barely

readable.  Skelton is believed to be buried in New Orleans.”

On February 29, 2004, Davidson County Cemetery Survey volunteers visited the site of the Hardgrave Cemetery, Williamson County, Tennessee.  The two military markers for Francis and Skelton Hardgrave were located in the cemetery with many other family tombstones.  To view the tombstone inscriptons in the Hardgrave Cemetery, Williamson County, Tennessee, on the Internet, enter the name:  Hardgrave Cemetery.  Then on the menu, click-on Horseshoe Bend,  inscriptions by Charles E. Doggett.

Report. March 1, 2004

IN

MEMORY OF

LOUIS DEMOSS

BORN  OCT. 1753

DIED SEPT. 1820

On June 30, 2004, Judy Campbell, a descendant of LOUIS DEMOSS, reported to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey that she had visited the Providence Church Cemetery and found his tombstone in an obscure place.  Cemetery Survey volunteers visited the graveyard on July 7, 2004, and indeed the tombstone was located and the inscription was clearly legible, as recorded above.

Addition to the Providence Church Cemetery web site listing.  August 2004.
