SITE SURVEYED NOVEMBER 30, 2000
Archaeological investigation of the Dempsey Sawyer Cemetery took place during 2004. Examination of the graveyard site revealed 13 unknown burials and 6 known burials for persons with inscribed tombstones. The tombstones were cleaned and conserved and reset in the cemetery. Cumberland Research Group, Inc., with Dan Sumner Allen IV, Staff Archaeologist/ Conservator, conducted the archaeological investigation and restoration of the tombstones in the cemetery.
No additional tombstones with inscriptions were located during the archaeological work. Of special interest is that even after cleaning and conservation of the tombstone, the inscription for the age of Mrs. Dina Vick at her death still appeared the same: 115 Years.
