Additional Cemetery Listings.

Harpeth Gleanings, Volume I., Winter, 1981.  Cemeteries and tombstones were compiled in this publication.  The information about the South Harpeth Church Cemetery was provided by Verla S. Hodges (now deceased).  These findings are also on record in the Manuscript division of the Tennessee State Library & Archives in “Cemeteries for Davidson County.”   It is not clear whether these listings were prepared from the tombstone inscriptions or from genealogical data in the files of Verla S. Hodges.   In the past 23 years, some of the tombstones in the South Harpeth Church of Christ Cemetery may have deteriorated to the point where the inscriptions have become illegible or may have disintegrated altogether.  For those reasons, the following listing is presented:

Allen, John David.  Aug, 23, 1869 – Dec. 23, 1904

Allen, Bettie Linton.  Sept. 5, 1872 – March 21, 1964

Allen, Lulie Lee.  Oct. 10, 1902 – Nov. 8, 1965

Linton, Eustacia Ann Hughes. 1832 – 1912

Linton, Rosa Lee.  Dec. 14, 1865 – Aug. 12, 1924

Linton, Tommie, son of J. V. & Bettie Linton.  Jan. 8, 1879 – Jan. 21, 1879

Research Information.

West Nashville, People and Environs, by Sarah Foster Kelley, 1987.

This publication contains important information on the Linton family and connections. On pages 147 – 148:  “The village of Linton, located about fifteen miles southwest of Nashville, on the South Harpeth River, was originally called Allison’s Mill.  It was changed to Linton when a post office was placed in McPherson’s Store… The community was said to have been named for Widow Johanna Linton, who had settled in the section prior to 1805…”

The three marriages of  William James Linton were described in this book:

W .J. Linton married (1st), on September 10, 1843,  Jarutio Jane Vaughan, daughter of Johnson Vaughan, by  his second marriage to Elizabeth Lowe.  W.J. Linton and Jarutio had five children.  She died in 1853.  Mrs. Kelley described the burial place of Jarutio, “laid to rest in the family cemetery enclosed with a high stone fence next to the South Harpeth Christian Church.  It was the same church for which Joseph Davey in 1812 deeded a one acre plot for a meetinghouse.  It was constructed on logs but later burned.  When reconstructed, the building was made of brick and soon became a landmark of the community.”

W. J. Linton married (2nd), in 1854, Mary Jane Moss, daughter of Parsons W. and Elizabeth Moss.  She died within the year and was “buried in the Linton graveyard.”

W. J. Linton married (3rd), Christmas Eve 1856, Eustacia Ann (Hughes) McLemore, the widow of Daniel J. McLemore and daughter of Thomas and Lucy (Bond) Hughes.  W. J. and Eustacia Linton had six children.

Research Information.

According to the Andy Connelly, pastor of South Harpeth Church of Christ (2004), there was always a graveyard connected with the church.  The original structure, built in 1812,  burned and the church was re-built prior to the Civil War.  A portion of the secondary construction exists today including the separate doors for men and women to enter the sanctuary (2004).
