Additions to Williams Cemetery  OH-07

On May 13, 2005, Cemetery Survey Volunteers revisited the Williams Cemetery to take photographs of the fallen obelisk in the graveyard for a descendant who had emailed the Davidson County Cemetery Survey web site.  To the surprise and pleasure of the Volunteers, the property owner was at home and pointed out that the obelisk had been restored.  Thanks were due to Eugene Williams, descendant of the original Williams of this part of the Davidson County,  whose ancestors were buried in this cemetery.  The inscriptions on the obelisk could not be read in the past because the words were facing down to the ground.

Additions to Williams Cemetery.  OH-07

Eugene Williams, descendant of Nimrod Williams who was buried in the Williams Cemetery, sent information to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey on May 31, 2005.

From an article by Vance Little, City Historian, Brentwood Journal, August 1, 1996:

“… The first of the Williams family to come to what is now Brentwood was Daniel Williams.  He got here a few months before the main body of settlers arrived in 1780… At the first meeting of the Davidson County Court in 1783, Williams was elected sheriff. It was Davidson County, North Carolina, then, since Tennessee did not become a state until 1796.  As sheriff, he was the chief law enforcement office of the frontier settlement.  He was succeeded to that office by his son Sampson,  who became the second sheriff of Davidson County. Daniel Williams died in 1793.  He was presumably buried on the Williams plantation.  Court records reveal that he was living “near Mayfield Station” in 1789.  In his will he named the following children:  James, Amos, Turner, Nimrod, Daniel, Sampson, Wright and Eunice… Nimrod, along with two brothers, fought in the Revolutionary War.  Nimrod continued to live on the Williams land after the death of his father…”

Nimrod and his wife Christiana and many of their family members were buried in the Williams Cemetery.  Most of the land around the cemetery has been developed.  Yet some of the original land is still in the hands of Eugene Williams, descendant of the original settlers.
