Griffin, Joel R. Cemetery

Griffin, Joel Cemetery, Davidson County, Tennessee

WC-01: NASHVILLE, DAVIDSON COUNTY, TN. OLD CLARKSVILLE PIKE

CEMETERY SURVEYORS VISITED THIS SITE OF THIS TOMBSTONE ON OCTOBER 9, 2000. THE SITE WAS REVISITED ON JANUARY 9, 2003.

ON JANUARY 9, 2003, THE TOMBSTONE MARKER FOR JOEL R. GRIFFIN WAS FOUND TO BE LOCATED, BY RECENT SURVEY, JUST BEYOND THE PROPERTY LINE OF THE ANDERSON GARRETT FUNERAL HOME, JOELTON. ON THIS DATE, ONE OF THE FUNERAL DIRECTORS STATED THAT THE MARKER, PLACED IN RECENT YEARS, HAD BEEN ERECTED ON THE SPOT THOUGHT TO BE THE BURIAL GROUND FOR JOEL R. GRIFFIN. THE MARKER IS NOT THE ORIGINAL TOMBSTONE.

IN JOHN P. GRAVES, NORTHWEST DAVIDSON COUNTY, PUBLISHED IN 1975, PAGE 55, THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS GIVEN ON THE BURIAL SITE OF JOEL GRIFFIN:

ACCORDING TO GUY BATES, A PROMINENT MERCHANT OF THE COMMUNITY, JOELTON WAS NAMED FOR "OLD MAN" JOEL GRIFFIN. THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMUNITY LOVED MR. GRIFFIN AND HELD HIM IN HIGH ESTEEM. WHEN HE DIED HE WAS BURIED AT THE FOOT OF A PINE TREE AS WAS THE CUSTOM IN THOSE DAYS. THE GRAVE HAS NO MARKER OTHER THAN THE TREE WHICH IS LOCATED NEAR THE  ANDERSON COLE AND GARRETT FUNERAL HOME NEAR THE TOP OF THE RIDGE IN JOELTON.

SITE SURVEYED ON OCTOBER 9, 2000, AND JANUARY 9, 2003.
