Front inscription: HERE LIES/ JOHN HAYWOOD/ JURIST - HISTORIAN/ BORN MARCH 16, 1762/ IN HALIFAX COUNTY/ NORTH CAROLINA/ DIED DECEMBER 12, 1826/ AT "TUSCULUM"/ ADJOINING THIS PLOT.
Side inscription: JOHN HAYWOOD/ FATHER OF COMMON LAW IN TENNESSEE/ HAVING SERVED HIS NATIVE STATE OF/ NORTH CAROLINA AS ATTORNEY GENERAL/ AND JUDGE, HE REMOVED TO/ TENNESSEE IN 1807, AND PRACTICED/ LAW UNTIL 1816, WHEN HE WAS/ ELECTED BY THE LEGISLATURE/ TO THE SUPREME COURT OF ERRORS/ AND APPEAL, SERVING UNTIL/ HIS DEATH IN 1826. AMONG HIS/ PUBLISHED LEGAL WORKS WERE THE REVISAL OF THE PUBLIC ACTS/ OF NORTH CAROLINA AND TENNESSEE,/ 1809. THE FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED/ IN NASHVILLE, AND FIVE VOLUMES OF/ HAYWOOD'S REPORTS OF CASES DECIDED BY THE COURTS OF NORTH CAROLINA/ AND TENNESSEE WHILE HE WAS/ ON THE BENCH.
