D.A.R. Chapter Dedicates Markers Sunday Afternoon
“The unveiling and dedication of markers at the graves of two Revolutionary Soldiers who lie buried in Davidson County cemeteries was conducted Sunday afternoon by the Fort Nashborough Chapter, D.A.R.  The first service was held at the grave of James Russell, Indian fighter and circuit rider.  Miss Anita Williams, regent, presided and the following program was given…   Miss Williams stated that the memorial services of the afternoon were made possible through the cooperation of the United State government with the local chapter, it having furnished the markers for James Russell grave.   Fort Nashborough is among several Nashville chapters of D.A. R. to take advantage of the government’s offer to furnish such stones and this is the first unveiling of these markers in Davidson County.  From the Russell grave the Daughters went to the Mill Creek Cemetery at which place a restoration service took place at the tomb of Joseph Vick. The service opened with remarks by the chapter regent and the singing of “America the Beautiful” followed by a prayer by Dr. J. R. Sharpe, of Lockeland Baptist Church.  Miss Williams then presented to those assembled, descendants of Joseph Vick, Delores, daughter of Mrs. W. P. Barton of Donelson as representative of the seventh generation among a large number of descendants present.  Mrs. Edythe Whitley, chapter historian, gave a brief biographical sketch oj Joseph Vick.  “Faith of Our Fathers” was sung; there was a prayer and in silence Mary Lea Taylor, C.A.R. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Taylor, placed upon the tomb a wreath of flowers in memoriam from Fort Nashborough.”

“…On January 17, 2004, the Board of Directors voted to proceed with a boundary survey of the graveyard.  This will provide documentation for two important projects.  The first is to get the property records to Davidson County to establish ownership by Concord-Grandview Baptist Church.  Dr. Jess Love, the President of Friends of Mill Creek, is the pastor of that church, and he secured a resolution from the governing body of that church to convey ownership of the graveyard to our organization, at no charge.  Secondly, the property transfer will accompany an application to have the property placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The necessary fieldwork to prove the age of the Mill Creek building is complete, thanks to Tennessee’s State Archaeologist Nick Fielder… The survey of the property was found to be 3.97 acres, as opposed to the public record of 3.85 acres… The surveyor was instructed to locate and record the two walled graveyard plots, along with the approximate site of the original church building.  In 1994, Nick fielder assisted us in locating the foundation of the old building…”
