Replacement Marker for Dr. William McWhirter. Glenda Todd, descendant of Dr. McWhirter, was instrumental in placement of a marker at Spring Hill Cemetery. According to Glenda Todd: "William McWhirter was friends with Rev. Thomas Craighead and his family, traveling with them from Pennsylvania to North Carolina to Tennessee. William's son, George Marlin McWhirter, owned land that he sold to Thomas Craighead. Rev. Craighead, in turn, gave this land for a graveyard and it became known as the Old Craighead Burying Ground. William McWhirter was buried in the Old Craighead Burying Ground in an unmarked grave. In 2009, Spring Hill Cemetery gave permission for a marker for Dr. William McWhirter to be placed in the Old Craighead Burying Ground section of the cemetery. William McWhirter ca 1720-1802 Physician Signer of Cumberland Compact With Robertson's 1780 Overland Party Addition to Spring Hill Cemetery website listing. 6-29-2013 |
