SITE SURVEYED NOVEMBER 3, 2001
On July 8, 2013, Susan Quinn, Cemetery Survey Volunteer, reported that there was major construction activity on the tract at the location of the Thomas Cemetery. Contact was made with David Kline, Metro Planning Commission Mapping, to inquire what was taking place and whether the cemetery was threatened. Mr. Kline made inquiries and learned that a pipe line was being built through the property by Piedmont Gas. He also learned that archaeological investigation of the graveyard had been conducted prior to any work on the site. The cemetery will be protected during the construction period.
Photographs of three tombstones were also taken by Susan Quinn and sent-in to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey project. Two of these tombstones were on-site during the survey in 2001. One tombstone, for Thomas Woodrow Thomas, replaced the fieldstone which had been identified, in 2001, as his burial place. On July 10, 2013, the research files for the Thomas Cemetery were examined at Metro Archives. The name and phone number of the 2001 surveyor was learned. A call was made to Joyce Thomas Gehlin, descendant, on July 10th, who confirmed that the new tombstone had been placed in the Thomas Cemetery by descendants in Alabama. She was unaware of construction activity by Piedmont Gas and was relieved to hear the good report from David Kline.
