Unnamed Cemetery - Hermitage (Possibly Kerr or Dodson)

HE-31: NASHVILLE, DAVIDSON COUNTY, TN.  Original location of the cemetery was in the area of the present-day extension of Old Hickory Blvd. to Lebanon Pike.

In the early 1980's, a cemetery in the above-described vicinity was removed.  People recall that there was a tall obelisk, some smaller tombstones and some fieldstones in the graveyard.  The name of the cemetery was not known.  Fletch Coke, on her way home from a meeting at the Hermitage, remembered seeing archaeologists at work in the graveyard in the early 1980's.  When asked that they were doing, the men replied that they were moving the graves.

Report. 2-22-2004

Information was sent by Kim M. Murphy and by Joe N. Payne about this cemetery.

According to Mr. Murphy:  "In the early 1980's, I was working in the Hermitage area when I noticed this very small, old, grown-up cemetery. I am 90% sure there was an obelisk with "Kerr" engraved on it.  I think that the cemetery was located on that stretch of Old Hickory Blvd. which was being cut through from Lebanon Pike to Dodson Chapel Road.  The graveyard  was on the right side of Old Hickory Blvd., going south."
[Note: In 2013, this would be the parking lot area of Lowe's]

Joe T.Payne, TDOT, sent documents, including maps which showed the enclosure for a cemetery which was to be relocated because of the Right of Way.  The maps showed the location as described above by Mr. Murphy.  One of the documents made reference to "part of the property devised to Dr. Mayhew W. Dodson and Henry D. Dodson, under the will of Mrs. Mayhew Dodson, of record in Will Book 69, Page 312, Davidson County."

Anyone with information about this Kerr or Dodson family graveyard, please send an email to the Davidson County Cemetery Survey website.
